Journey Through Cambodia & Vietnam: Solo Adventures and Luxury Cruising
There’s something magical about travelling, and my recent journey through Cambodia and Vietnam was nothing short of transformative. Beginning in Siem Reap, the gateway to the stunning Angkor Wat, I spent three days immersing myself in history, spirituality, and the warm embrace of Cambodian culture before flying to Phnom Penh. From there, my journey took a luxurious turn aboard Emerald Cruises’ 7-night river cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam, creating unforgettable memories every step of the way.
Siem Reap: Temples, Traditions, and Tranquility
My time in Siem Reap was a dream. On my first morning, I stood in awe at Angkor Wat during sunrise—the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The serene atmosphere and the temple’s spiritual significance were humbling. I had the privilege of exploring the history and architectural wonders with a private guide for just USD $10—a bargain for such rich insights.
My accommodations at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor were the epitome of historic charm and luxury. Opened in 1932, this iconic hotel exudes elegance and exceeded all expectations. The staff, like all Cambodians I encountered, were kind and welcoming, adding warmth to my stay.
In the evenings, I embraced Siem Reap’s lively yet relaxed vibe. A visit to Pub Street introduced me to Cambodian curry in the rain—an oddly perfect combination—and later, a $5 massage made the night unforgettable.
A highlight was a morning blessing by a local monk, a complimentary service offered by Raffles. This cleansing ceremony was not only spiritual but deeply moving, embodying the core Buddhist principles of kindness, empathy, and non-judgment.
Phnom Penh: History and Humanity
After bidding farewell to Siem Reap, I flew to Phnom Penh, where history revealed its depths. The Killing Fields and Genocide Museum were haunting reminders of Cambodia’s tragic past under the Khmer Rouge. Meeting one of the seven survivors of S-21 was a poignant moment I’ll never forget.
Amidst the heaviness of history, there was beauty. At a Buddhist monastery, I met a nun who has lived there for 40 years, finding peace after unimaginable loss. Her story—one of resilience, love, and contentment—was a powerful testament to the human spirit.
Luxury on the Mekong: Emerald Harmony Starship
As Saturday approached, I embarked on the Emerald Harmony Starship for a 7-night river cruise, transitioning from solo adventures to a shared journey with fellow travel agents. The ship was a floating sanctuary, offering 5-star amenities, exquisite meals, and immersive excursions that brought the Mekong Delta to life.
Highlights included:
- Tuk-tuk tour of Phnom Penh by night: Pffered a vibrant glimpse of its modern charm
- Remote Island Visits: Witnessing family-run businesses like incense-making and teak boat building.
- Sa Dec, Vietnam: Touring the “Lover’s House,” the inspiration for a famous love story, and learning about local rice production.
- Culinary Adventures: Hands-on experiences making rice paper, coconut candy, and puffed rice treats.
One standout memory was visiting a family home where five generations lived together. Their warmth and hospitality, paired with fresh mangos, was a reminder of the simplicity and richness of communal life.
Reflections on Travel
Traveling solo through Cambodia gave me time to connect deeply with the culture and people, while the river cruise offered a luxurious yet educational transition into Vietnam. From spiritual blessings to profound historical insights, this journey was a perfect blend of soul-searching and indulgence.
I am incredibly grateful to Scenic and Emerald Cruises for this opportunity, proving that the best travel experiences blend meaningful encounters with moments of pure luxury. If you’re considering a trip to Southeast Asia, I hope my adventure inspires you to embrace every facet of this beautiful region.
